AOC Never Fails to Surprise! Suspending Mortgage Payments Is Racist
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has enjoyed a recent surge in popularity because of his measured response to the coronavirus pandemic. He’s been issuing all of the necessary executive orders and providing the proper relief to New York residents. As businesses grind to a halt, there is a massive swath of employees who are left without a paycheck.
While he has been trying his best to help New York residents, he’s ran into one major detractor. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has decided that his measures are not good enough. What’s her beef with the governor? She happens to disagree with one of his executive orders.
The order that is now being discussed was designed to offer relief to various homeowners who do not know where their next mortgage payment is coming from. Residents who qualify have had their payments suspended for the next three months. There shouldn’t be anything wrong with that but AOC found something to complain about.
At this point, we should not be surprised. AOC always finds fault, no matter how hard anyone tries. Even when the governor suspended mortgage payments for homeowners, she dug in her heels. Can you believe that AOC said he is a racist who only cares about the wealthy?
In her mind, a minority is much less likely to own their own home and that is why the policy is racist. There are a number of holes in this logic, though. For starters, Cuomo did not freeze their mortgage payments. We suspect that a lot of people are not fully aware of what a mortgage suspension is.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took aim at Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s decision to suspend mortgage payments but not rental payments during the coronavirus outbreak, accusing him of giving “preferential treatment” to wealthier New Yorkers.
“If you called for a suspension or moratorium on mortgage payments, then we should also call for that same treatment on rent payments,” AOC said during an appearance on WNYC’s “The Brian Lehrer Show” Tuesday.
“We’re kind of creating a class and race issue. We’re essentially rewarding and offering preferential treatment to landowners and folks who are more wealthy, and we’re not offering that same kind of relief to renters,” the Democratic socialist continued.
Homeowners are not being a given free pass when it comes to their mortgages. They are still going to have to catch up on these payments once the pandemic has been mitigated. The complaints that are being levied by Ocasio-Cortez tie into the rumblings that are currently taking place in New York City.
Residents have been threatening to go on a rent strike and AOC is offering her support to these people. The protests are understandable on a certain level but there are also various facts that need to be taken into account. The renters are not seeking the same suspension that the homeowners are receiving.
Instead of angling for the same suspension of payment that the homeowners received, renters simply want to enjoy a free ride for the next few months. Landlords cannot afford to give handouts, though. Unless the federal government is ready to offer a massive stimulus payment to all of the landlords who are going to be stiffed, there is not much that can be done here.
The Governor has also stepped up to help renters keep a roof over their heads in the meantime, too. Evictions have been suspended for the next three months, so that people do not have to worry about such concerns. Homeowners are going to be making their payments at the tail end of their mortgage and that’s why the comparison is a faulty one.
Broad government policies are always going to be referred to as “racist” by people who do not actually know better. While we might expect this type of commentary from residents who are merely venting during a difficult time, you’d like to think that an actual Congresswoman might take a moment to learn the facts before shooting her mouth off.
That’s all AOC knows how to do. She says whatever pops into her head and tries to make every issue into a racial spectacle. The policies that are enacted during moments like these apply equally to everyone. The percentage of home owners in New York City is also not as high as you would think. It’s a city where essentially everyone is renting.
White people are also not the most likely to own their own home in New York City. Asians lead the pack, clocking in at 41 percent. White residents come in second, at 37 percent. AOC loves to play the race card because it allows her to seem intelligent, when she has not taken the time to consider all of the facts. It’s gotten to a point where we expect it.
The realities that New York City residents are facing cannot be boiled down to black and white. There are always going to be shades of grey that have to be considered. We apologize for the use of this particular pun but it is apt in this instance. Hopefully, AOC will start to think before she speaks in the future. It sure beats whatever she has been doing up to this point.
