Behind The Subpoena of Donald Trump Jr.
Richard Burr, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, put out a subpoena for Donald Trump Jr. to come and testify.
The subpoena was issued behind the scenes and no one wanted to talk about it.
The issuing of the subpoena was a surprise to just about everyone.
Even when the news came out the Senator did not really want to discuss why at the time.
Republicans and even the President were completely taken by surprise.
Senator Rand Paul said about the move, “persecution of the president’s family.”
The President even stated that he had been, “very surprised.”
There are just a few of the reactions and statements that were made by fellow Senators regarding the subpoena.
This move by Richard Burr is rather unlike him.
He has been around the Washington landscape for a long time.
He has been voting for conservative values for over 20 years and would be one of the last people to challenge the President.
The Democrats are still looking for an impeachment process to begin on the President.
Frank Luntz, who is a GOP pollster, mentioned about the subpoena, “is a courageous move for Burr, for the senator, because he knew that the angriest people would be members of his own party.
It shows that he is pretty secure in his position in the Senate and among his own voters.”
Luntz mentioned that Burr is one of many that really does not have to face voters for several years and it appears that he is thinking about not running in the 2022 election.
The Republican Party has been divided on the issue of the subpoena for Donald Trump Jr.
The rift could get bigger if Trump fails to show up and cooperate with the subpoena.
If he does not show up, then the committee will have to figure out what to do next.
When the Attorney General did not appear before the House Judiciary Committee they were left with seeking new avenues of how to proceed.
The same could happen here.
Trump Jr. could choose not to show up and hope that the panel would not decide to hold him in contempt of Congress.
Many believe that this would be an unlikely scenario given the full vote needed in the Republican held Senate.
Donald Trump Jr. could also invoke the Fifth Amendment and not answer any questions that could lead to self-incrimination.
Lastly, there could be a compromise reach if both sides decided to deal with each other to reach a consensus.
Burr does have some supporters.
Tim Scott of Texas mentioned that people, “had great confidence” with what Burr was doing and would support him moving forward.
Roy Blunt has also alluded to the fact that there was no collusion with the President and Russia, and he was, “just trying to be sure that everybody’s asked all the questions” that need to be asked.
He also stated, “I don’t think there’s any possibility that any of those questions would change the conclusion.” Speaking of the Mueller report findings.
There are some that are stating that the request is just not related to the Mueller report at all and is just for other business.
They are pointing out the Mueller report was a criminal investigation and this is more of an intelligence investigation.
The Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee has stated that the committee is, “a little old-fashioned.
I think both Burr and I have been under pressure.
He’s been under pressure to get it done.
I’ve been under pressure of: reach a conclusion. We’ve kind of tried to stick to: follow the facts.”
Part of this move may be to declare that the committee has the right to bring back witnesses if it wants to.
They have the right to try to fill in missing information.
One really has to wonder what could possibility be left out of such an extreme investigation.
The Mueller report was lengthy and it looked into a massive amount of date to come up with its conclusions.
The President and his family are being targeted for things that are not really problems.
