A recent study published in Aging and Mental Health has found that retirement is associated with an increase in depressive symptoms among retirees, with alcohol use impacting these symptoms. The research indicated that moderate drinking may reduce depressive symptoms, whereas heavy drinking is associated with worsened depression. The study analyzed data from 27,575 participants aged 50 and older from 1994 to 2020. Retired individuals showed a 0.04-point increase in depression symptoms compared to their working counterparts, with binge drinkers experiencing a 0.07-point increase.
Moderate drinkers, however, reported 0.09 fewer depression symptoms than non-drinkers. The results emphasize the need for screening alcohol use and depression in retirees and developing healthier coping mechanisms. The study also highlights the physical risks associated with drinking, especially for older adults. It suggests alternative coping strategies such as physical activity, balanced diets, mindfulness practices, and staying socially connected.
