Rashida Tlaib Declares War on Bill Maher
A most entertaining feud has developed between Rep Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich and Bill Maher, the late-night HBO political talker, has broken out over the BDS movement. The feud started when Maher decided to take umbrage over BDS, an organization dedicated to the destruction of the State of Israel through economic warfare reminiscent of the Nazi era “do not buy from Jews” campaign.
Maher spent part of his show shredding BDS, according to the Daily Wire:
“It’s a bulls**t purity test. BDS is a bulls**t purity test by people who want to appear woke but actually slept through history class. It’s predicated on this notion — I think it’s very shallow thinking — that the Jews in Israel are mostly white and the Palestinians are browner, so they must be innocent and correct, and the Jews must be wrong.
“As if the occupation came right out of the blue, that these completely peaceful people found themselves occupied, Forget about the intifadas and the suicide bombings and the rockets and how many wars.
“Let me read Omar Barghouti, one of the co-founders of the movement. His quote: ‘No rational Palestinian … would ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.’ So that’s where that comes from, this movement, someone who doesn’t even want a Jewish state at all. Somehow this side never gets presented in the American media. It’s very odd.”
Maher is accustomed to making outrageous statements. He once used an obscene, misogynist slur to refer to Sarah Palin. More recently, the wealthy HBO talker wished for a recession so that President Donald Trump would not be elected. However, his musings on the BDS likely got an appreciative reception from rational quarters.
Rashida Tlaib was of a different opinion, however. She tweeted:
“Maybe folks should boycott his show.
“I am tired of folks discrediting a form of speech that is centered on equality and freedom. This is exactly how they tried to discredit & stop the boycott to stand up against the apartheid in S. Africa. It didn’t work then and it won’t now.”
It should be noted that Israel extends full civil rights to its Arab citizens, in contrast to the way that apartheid South Africa treated non-whites.
Tlaib has been involved in a controversy concerning an abortive attempt to visit Israel by her and fellow Muslim congresswoman, Democrat Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. The Israeli government initially approved their visit, but then rescinded the approval when details of what Tlaib and Omar intended to do while in Israel. Then Rashida Tlaib asked to visit ger aging grandmother on the West Bank, which Israel agreed to on humanitarian grounds so long as the congresswoman agreed not to engage in political agitation. Tlaib initially agreed to those conditions, but the next day she angerly rejected them. As an Israeli government official quipped, “It looks like she hates Jews more than she loves her grandmother.”
Many observers, including Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, thought that while Israel was entirely justified in barring the two Muslim representatives, the Jewish state suffered a public relations defeat for having done so. However, some of the uglier aspects of an organization called Miftah which sponsored the visit.
According to the National Review, Miftah not only has promulgated the blood libel, the idea that Jews use the blood of Christian babies to make matzoh during Passover but has spread Neo-Nazi tropes about how Jews allegedly control the media. The organization also celebrates Palestinian terrorists who slaughtered civilians, including children.
Despite these sordid details, House Democrats are mulling retaliation against both Israeli and American diplomats against Israel for barring the two representatives. Fox News reports that the White House has fired back.
“Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar have a well-documented history of anti-Semitic comments, anti-Semitic social media posts and anti-Semitic relationships. Israel has the right to prevent people who want to destroy it from entering the country – and Democrats’ pointless congressional inquiries here in America cannot change the laws Israel has passed to protect itself.”
Congressional Democrats are mulling a “vote of no confidence” against Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer and an Inspector General investigation against David Friedman, American ambassador to Israel. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has condemned Israel’s barring of Tlaib and Omar as a “sign of weakness.”
However, some observers note that the House Democrats have been maneuvered into tolerating anti-Semitism just in time for the 2020 election when Republicans are anxious to retake the House as well as reelect President Trump. Trump has suggested the Omar and Tlaib have become the face of the Democratic Party, not exactly a good look.
