Whose Side is U.S. Rep. Tlaib On?

Following another deadly terrorist attack in Israel, U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib takes a nearly anti-American sentiment in recent statements regarding the tragedy. The details of the attack, as they are with every terrorist attack, were cowardly and devious. One story called this attack, “truly diabolical.” According to that story, the attack was planned using an IED (Improvised Explosive Device), which was controlled remotely. How cunning and evil was this scheme? That remote device allowed the attackers to set off the IED when they decided… and they waited for this family.

The aftermath is difficult to grasp and is as heartbreaking as it is awful. Rina Shnerb, 17, of Lod and the daughter of the family the terrorists attacked, didn’t survive. She celebrated her birthday just the week before. Her brother, 19-year-old Dvir, is on life support and sedated as he suffered injuries throughout his body. The details, the injuries and the horrors of this attack could be discussed farther but it isn’t necessary. This is quite simply the cowardly facelessness of terrorism in its most ugly and vile nature.

Then, U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib, in what starts as an understandable and heartfelt Tweet says, “This is absolutely tragic & horrible. My heart goes out to Rina’s family. More than ever we need to support nonviolent approaches to ending the Israeli occupation and guaranteeing equal rights for all. Extremism that puts innocent lives at risk moves us no closer to peace.”

That sounds good, compassionate, and appropriate, right? Then comes the Tweet that follows which Tlaib proudly pointed to. It read, “We’re not confused: the rightward drift of Israeli and US govt make the situation on the ground less safe for Israelis and Palestinians.”

Yeah, she supported and all but chose to say that herself! How is it not clear that this can only raise tensions for American forces? How is it better for you or your country if you lash out at your own country’s occupation in these regions? Those questions are bewildering enough but as bad as they are they aren’t as ominous as the big question.

As an American, as a U.S. Representative and as an elected official, how is this statement not an anti-American sentiment? How is this not a loud statement against the people and the nation you represent, against your – home?

This isn’t about any real accusation of Rep. Tlaib’s allegiance or loyalty to her country though, this is about a principle. President Trump a few months ago made comments about a certain aforementioned Congresswoman and others. While some tried to twist the statements the President made about these Congresswomen going back to their own countries and fixing them first, the principle applies. It applied then and it applies perfectly now.

What the President was saying, in his ever so eloquent and uniquely Donald Trump-style was this, ‘don’t be part of the problem be part of the solution.’ That is after all, why our politicians and legislators get paid. What we don’t ask of them and what we don’t vote for them to do, is to create hatred for America all over the world. But should we really have to tell this to an elected member of Congress?

The title of this story, “Whose side is U.S. Rep. Tlaib On” was just poking fun, because we are fairly certain that she supports the United States. What we aren’t so sure about is her understanding the responsibility she has to her voters, to her country and to those we have defending us around the world in uniform. Terrorists need no more fuel. Our U.S. military needs no more enemies and our nation doesn’t benefit in any way, from speaking poorly about it or its government.

The title was in jest but the message could be life and death. President Trump recognizes this and has spoken harshly about these behaviors but the squad may be uncontrollable after all. We can only hope now, that such negative commentary isn’t the impetus for another attack and another tragic story like the one last Friday on the West Bank.
