On October 5, 2022, before the sun came up, armed FBI agents showed up at Paul Vaughn's home in Hickman County, Tennessee. Vaughn — a father of eleven — was taken from his family at gunpoint. His crime: he'd prayed and sung hymns at a peaceful sit-in outside a Tennessee abortion clinic in 2021.
The Trump Department of Justice just settled with him for $1.2 million.
Vaughn had faced up to 11 years in federal prison under the FACE Act, a 1994 law that criminalizes interference with abortion clinic access. He was eventually sentenced to three years of supervised release — no prison time — but only after being arrested 60 miles from his home and released without his wallet or phone. The Biden DOJ charged him under the same statute it used to target more than 45 defendants across 20-plus cases, nearly all of them pro-life activists.
Vaughn's attorney Steve Crampton, Senior Counsel at the Thomas More Society, didn't mince words about what happened. "This family did nothing wrong. Paul prayed and sang. He bore witness to his faith and for that, the full weight of the federal government was brought crashing down on his front door before the sun rose," Crampton said.
"What was done to Paul and his family was a profound injustice, and we are grateful that this settlement acknowledges that," Crampton added.
Vaughn himself kept it simple: "This chapter is finally closed, and our family looks forward with gratitude and hope."
The settlement includes the standard government boilerplate that it "is in no way intended to be an admission of liability or fault on the part of the United States." Of course not. Writing a seven-figure check to a man your predecessor's administration raided at dawn is just a coincidence. A $1.2 million clerical matter.
Vaughn isn't the only one. Mark Houck, a Catholic father of seven, was arrested by the FBI on September 23, 2022, after local authorities had already declined to press charges over an incident outside a Planned Parenthood on October 13, 2021 — where Houck pushed an aggressive escort twice. A jury acquitted Houck in January 2023. He also received a seven-figure settlement.
The numbers tell a story the settlement language tries to avoid. Under the FACE Act's three-decade existence, 97 percent of prosecutions have targeted pro-life advocates. Not the people firebombing pregnancy centers after the Dobbs decision in 2022. Not the ones vandalizing churches. The dad who sang hymns on a sidewalk. That's where the full weight of federal law enforcement landed.
President Trump has pardoned more than 20 pro-life activists who were prosecuted under Biden. The DOJ has dismissed three civil lawsuits against pro-life defendants and issued a directive limiting future abortion-related FACE Act prosecutions to "extraordinary circumstances" only. The Trump DOJ's Weaponization Working Group report laid out the pattern in detail — a federal agency systematically deployed against one side of one political issue.
The Biden DOJ didn't prosecute Paul Vaughn because he was dangerous. They prosecuted him because the Dobbs decision made the activist left furious, and the administration needed to demonstrate it was doing something about it. A father of eleven praying on a sidewalk was easier to SWAT-raid than the people actually committing violence against pro-life centers.
