Thomas Holtzman, 68, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, is looking at ten years in federal prison. His crime wasn't violent. It wasn't financial. He's charged with fraudulently registering non-citizens to vote — and then helping them do it.
He wasn't alone. Four other people across three states were charged alongside him. Arrest footage is public. The DOJ announced it on September 4th.
Attorney General Todd Blanche didn't mince words: "The integrity of our elections, which are fundamental to democracy, should be of utmost importance to every American." Which sounds like common sense to most of us, and apparently like a declaration of war to everyone who spent five years insisting voter fraud was a right-wing fever dream.
The five defendants span Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Wisconsin. Marisol Guzman, 50, also of Carlisle, is charged with illegal voting as a non-citizen. Katya Rodriguez, 30, a Mexican national from Harrisburg, faces up to eleven years for fraudulent registration and false citizenship claims. Mercedes Alexandra Cardoso, 41, of Union County, New Jersey, is charged with voting illegally in the June 2024 primary. Jesus Javier Jurado Garcia, 25, a Mexican national in Beloit, Wisconsin, is charged with voting in the November 2022 general election.
Three states. Two election cycles — 2022 and 2024. Five people caught, charged, and facing real federal time.
FBI Director Kash Patel was careful to note that the cases represent "alleged unlawful votes rather than a finding about any broader election result." Fair enough on the legal disclaimer. But the point was never that five fraudulent votes swung a presidential election. The point is that non-citizens voted, Americans helped them do it, and the previous administration had zero interest in finding out.
The investigations were led by Homeland Security Investigations, the FBI, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Prosecutions are being handled through the U.S. Attorney's Offices for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and the District of New Jersey. Cardoso's initial court appearance is scheduled for September 8th. Jurado Garcia was charged on September 2nd.
For years, anyone who raised election integrity concerns got the same treatment: conspiracy theorist, election denier, threat to democracy. The phrase "voter fraud" was practically a terms-of-service violation on social media. Entire fact-checking industries were built around the premise that illegal voting was statistically nonexistent.
Now the DOJ is putting people in handcuffs for it. On camera.
The "it never happens" crowd has a quiet few options here. They can argue these five cases are isolated — which would require explaining why the previous DOJ never bothered looking. They can say the charges are politically motivated — which would require explaining what's political about enforcing citizenship requirements for voting. Or they can just pretend this news cycle didn't happen, which, given the track record, seems most likely.
Holtzman faces ten years. Rodriguez faces eleven. The others face up to a year each. These aren't slaps on the wrist dressed up as enforcement. These are federal charges with federal consequences, reported by 100PercentFedUp.
