Microsoft President Brad Smith signed a legally enforceable agreement giving Randi Weingarten's American Federation of Teachers oversight authority over how the company deploys artificial intelligence in schools. The deal, Smith said, "sets a high bar for child privacy and AI safety, and we'll extend this agreement to every school district across the country."

Randi Weingarten — the woman who lobbied the CDC behind closed doors to keep your kids home for a year and a half — is now Microsoft's AI safety partner.

The agreement doesn't just cover privacy. It includes provisions requiring Microsoft's AI products be designed for "equity" and "inclusion" — ensuring they are "accessible and fair." If that language sounds familiar, it's because it's the same framework that's been used to inject politics into every institution it touches. Now it's got a legally binding foothold inside the company that builds the software running in classrooms nationwide.

The Fair Election Fund, a watchdog group, flagged the arrangement in a letter to Senator Ted Cruz. Their assessment was blunt: "The company is once again using its reach in American classrooms to advance a partisan agenda, shaping how the next generation thinks, what they trust, and how they vote."

They weren't done. The letter continued: "It is doing so through a partner whose record of politicizing children's education should disqualify her."

The AFT's track record is the part Microsoft apparently didn't review. The Fair Election Fund spelled it out: "The partner Microsoft has chosen for this arrangement is the same person who kept schools closed during COVID-19 — lobbying the CDC behind closed doors, with AFT officials suggesting language that was incorporated into the CDC's February 2021 reopening guidance." That guidance kept millions of kids out of classrooms while private school students — and Weingarten's own union leadership — carried on with their lives.

Weingarten's union has spent the past 20 years as one of the most politically active organizations in American education. The AFT doesn't dabble in politics. Politics is the product. Education is the branding.

Microsoft's own history with ideological partnerships makes this worse, not better. The company previously partnered with NewsGuard, the self-appointed media truth arbiter that flagged conservative outlets while giving legacy media a pass. Microsoft quietly distanced itself from NewsGuard in February 2025 after the arrangement drew sustained criticism. Now they've moved on to a partner with an even longer record of political activism.

The Fair Election Fund's letter to Cruz closed with the core problem: "A corporation that has already lied to Congress and partnered with a union president who has consistently weaponized her position for political ends should not be trusted to set the terms for how AI shapes young American minds and influences elections."

A union with zero artificial intelligence expertise now has contractual authority over how AI gets built for American schools. The same organization that shaped CDC guidance to match its political preferences will now shape Microsoft's AI to match them too.

Every school district in the country runs Microsoft software. Smith promised to extend this agreement to all of them. Weingarten gets oversight. Parents get "equity and inclusion" baked into the algorithms teaching their children.

That's not a safety partnership. That's a licensing deal for ideology.
