Here's what Psaki told her viewers on MSNBC, as reported by NewsBusters: "Guess where Trump's adult son, Eric, is right now? Well, he's with his father in China... there he is... it certainly seems like Eric might be getting a little more than just quality time with his dad out of this China trip, doesn't it?" She was pushing the insinuation that Eric Trump was leveraging the presidential visit to line his own pockets through a company called ALT5 Sigma.
Eric Trump didn't let it slide. On May 16, he fired back: "Contrary to her monolog and blatant lies, I have NEVER been on the board of ALT5... I have had zero involvement in any merger discussions... I have zero business interests in China." That's not ambiguous. That's a man drawing a line and daring Psaki to cross it again.
To her credit — and I use that phrase loosely — Psaki did offer a half-hearted walk-back on her show: "Now to be as fair as possible. To Eric, I should say that his role at ALT5 is that, at the very least, been complicated." "Complicated" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. It's the cable news equivalent of saying "I can't prove what I just said, but I'm not taking it back either."
The hypocrisy is thicker than a DC phone book. Remember 2013? That's the year Hunter Biden — Vice President Joe Biden's son — flew to China on Air Force One with his father. Hunter came home with a business deal from a Chinese private equity firm. The media yawned. Democrats shrugged. Nobody on MSNBC ran breathless segments about the Biden family's "China problem."
New York Post columnist Miranda Devine, who's done more reporting on the Biden family's foreign entanglements than the rest of the press corps combined, put it perfectly: "I would rather not have seen another president's son fly into China on Air Force One when the memory of Joe and Hunter Biden's grift burns bright." Fair point. But there's a canyon of difference between having a family member on the trip and having a family member cut a deal — and Eric Trump says he did neither.
The bigger picture here isn't just about one segment on a show nobody watches. It's about the pattern. Psaki spent two years at the White House podium perfecting the art of saying absolutely nothing with total confidence. Now she's doing the same thing at MSNBC, except now the targets can sue. The Trumps have made it clear — through actual legal threats, not just social media bluster — that the era of consequence-free smears is over.
Psaki might want to have her lawyers circle back on that one.
