On June 14, 2025, a man dressed in a police officer's uniform showed up at the homes of two Minnesota Democratic state lawmakers and opened fire. State Senator Mark Hortman and his wife, state Representative Melissa Hortman, were killed. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were shot a short time later but survived.

The shooter was Vance Boelter. In 2019, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz personally appointed him to the Governor's Workforce Development Board.

The details of what Boelter did are disturbing. Boelter didn't snap in some random confrontation. He put on a police disguise. He went to their homes. He targeted specific elected officials. This was premeditated, planned, and executed by someone who had been trusted enough to serve on a gubernatorial board.

Boelter pleaded guilty to six federal charges: two counts of stalking, two counts of murder, and two federal firearm-shooting offenses. This week, he was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus 40 years. Federal prosecutors had taken the death penalty off the table in exchange for the guilty plea.

Boelter got his position of influence because of Tim Walz. The Governor was one election away from being Vice President of the United States. During his 2024 campaign, he made countless speeches about values, about Minnesota as a model, about the kind of people Walz surrounds himself with.

Walz has also been in the news this week for pardoning a Minnesota migrant who repeatedly raped a ten year old girl. Walz pardoned him so he wouldn't be deported back to his home country. This is the kind of people Walz is fighting to keep in the United States.

Talk about a pattern of bad reads on people.
